Kath, when did you start writing?

WALKER
I can&#;t remember when I started — I&#;ve been writing all along — but taking it seriously, from about , whilst I was in the Civil Rights Movement and the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders movement.

And I was first published in , with We Are Going.

You have to work on it. I like that … media, but another reason was that I felt poetry would be the breakthrough for the Aboriginal people because they were storytellers and song-makers, and I thought poetry would appeal to them more than anything else.

It was more of a book of their voices that I was trying to bring out, and I think I succeeded in doing this …
